How to Deactivate Data Execution Prevention in Windows XP

DEP, short of Data Execution Prevention, is a valuable feature in Windows XP. But because of the fact that it is not supported by all software or hardware, it will lead to some system issues and error messages. Therefore, to deactivate Data Execution Prevention in Windows XP is a good idea to make your computer safe and stable.

Today we will show Windows XP computer users how to disable the DEP step by step:

Step 1. Go to Start and open Control Panel

Step 2. Move your mouse to Performance and Maintenance link and click it

Step 3 Under the or pick a Control Panel icon option, find the System link and click it

Step 4. The System Properties window will appear. Click the Advanced tab in this windows

Step 5 Under Advanced tab, find Performance and click Settings button on it. This is also the first Settings button.

Step 6. Then the Performance Options box will pop up. Click the Data Execution Prevention tab.

Step 7. You will open the Data Execution Prevention window then. Uncheck the Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those 1 select: radio button

Step 8. Press the button Add…

Step 9. In the popped-up Open dialog box, choose to navigate to the C:\Windows directory, or other directory or folder that is installed in your Windows XP operating system. And then choose the explorer.exe file from the drop-down list

Step 10. Press Open button and then click OK to the resulting DEP warning that pops up

Step 11. Now press OK at the bottom of the DEP window

Step 12. The System Control Panel Applet window will appear warning you that your changes ask you to restart your computer. Click OK button

Step 13. Your computer will restart in few seconds. After the computer restarts, go to test your system to see if your problem has been fixed by turning off the DEP for explorer.exe. If it does not fix your PC problem, you need go back to the Data Execution Prevention settings to normal status by repeating the steps mentioned-above but in Step 7, and select Turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and services only radio button.
