Are you encountering the error code: 80048821 when signing in Windows Live Messenger? This error shows your sign-in name does not exist or your password is incorrect.

But don’t worry. Here I supply the solutions for you.

First, before you start, did you really enter the correct username and password? Please confirm this. If you make sure the username and password are 100% correct, and you still couldn’t sign in your Windows Live Messenger. Now you can try the below solutions.

  1. Change your password at http://passport.com, then try to sign in again. If you still cannot sign in, check the date and time on your computer.
  2. If the date and time is not correct, you need to properly reset the date and time on your computer. You can directly click on the date and time in the notification area which is commonly at the bottom of right lower screen. Then change date and time in the appeared window.
  3. Make sure whether you are using firewall like ZoneAlarm, Norton Internet Security and so on. If you are using the firewall or you have upgraded your firewall, you need to add or read Messenger to the allowed list in your firewall because Messenger does not have the right to access the Internet. If you disabled your firewall in the past, your Messenger may be still blocking. So try to restart the Messenger. And you may also try uninstalling an installed firewall to verify the cause.
  4. You need to clear your IE cache and cookies. If you are using IE 8 and above, you can from the Safety menu in the upper right click Delete Browsing History, deselect Preserve Favorites website data and select Temporary Internet files, Cookies to delete the cache and cookies. If you are using IE 7, you can from the Tools menu in the upper right, select Internet Options, then Under “Browsing history” click Delete…. Click Delete files to delete your cache and click Delete cookies to delete your cookies.
  5. You also need to check your IE Security settings. After you open IE by clicking the Start button, click the Tools button and then click Internet Options and the Security tab. You have to verify “Check for server certificate revocation “is unchecked and verify “Use SSL 2.0 and Use SSL 3.0 “is checked. Then click Ok.
  6. If you are using MSN Messenger 7, you click the Tools menu, then Options, then Connection category, then the Advanced Setting button, please uncheck all the options and click OK twice. Then try to sign in your Windows Live Messenger.
